Ingredients

  • 6 medium, peeled, cored, and sliced Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons, cut into small pieces Unsalted butter
  • 2 (for top and bottom) Pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1, beaten (for egg wash) Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425ยฐF (220ยฐC).
  2. Prepare your pie crust by rolling out one disk for the bottom and one for the top. Line a 9-inch pie dish with the bottom crust and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and salt. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared pie dish, spreading it out evenly.
  5. Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.
  6. Carefully place the second rolled-out pie crust over the top of the apples. Trim the edges and crimp to seal the crusts together.
  7. Cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  8. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and, if desired, sprinkle with coarse sugar for an extra crunch.
  9. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. If the edges of the pie are browning too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil halfway through baking.
  11. Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the filling to set.
  12. Slice and enjoy your classic apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired!
