Ingredients
- 6 medium, peeled, cored, and sliced Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup Brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 2 tablespoons, cut into small pieces Unsalted butter
- 2 (for top and bottom) Pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1, beaten (for egg wash) Egg
- 1 tablespoon Coarse sugar (optional)
Instructions
-
1
Preheat your oven to 425ยฐF (220ยฐC).
-
2
Prepare your pie crust by rolling out one disk for the bottom and one for the top. Line a 9-inch pie dish with the bottom crust and set aside.
-
3
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and salt. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
-
4
Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared pie dish, spreading it out evenly.
-
5
Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.
-
6
Carefully place the second rolled-out pie crust over the top of the apples. Trim the edges and crimp to seal the crusts together.
-
7
Cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
-
8
Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and, if desired, sprinkle with coarse sugar for an extra crunch.
-
9
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
-
10
If the edges of the pie are browning too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil halfway through baking.
-
11
Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the filling to set.
-
12
Slice and enjoy your classic apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired!
